Thorpe House unveil their new teaching block
A ceremony to mark the opening of a new science and technology block at Thorpe House School in Gerrards Cross took place last week.
All 198 of the school's pupils listened to speeches by head teacher Anthony Lock and by former science teacher Dr Audrey Hogarth who declared the new science and technology building officially open on Wednesday.
The £650,000 expansion project was paid for by a bank loan and by donations from parents and other people connected with the school.
Dr Hogarth, a former parent and governor and "one of its greatest fans," gave a humorous speech in which she recalled teaching science at the school in the days when there was no curriculum and when she had conducted experiments into the effect of sugary drinks on real teeth brought in by a pupil whose father was a dentist.
She said: "I discovered that if you put locusts in the fridge overnight, they will move in slow motion for several hours afterwards so that they boys could handle them."
She was presented with flowers by Patrick Lock, 16, the school's oldest pupil, and son of the head teacher.
Mr Lock joked: "We are very grateful that the bank lent us the money before the credit crunch because I'm not so certain that if we had asked for it afterwards they would have contributed."
He thanked the governing body, the architect, the firm of builders, and all who had contributed financially.
The new science laboratory and technology room has been in use for a year, and is part of an expansion of the senior school which finished in August and which has included six new classrooms and a revamped kitchen and dining area. Pupil numbers in the senior school have risen from 23 three years ago to 90.
