Mary-Barr.jpgA singer has taken it upon herself to produce a DVD designed to help carers of people with Alzheimer's disease.
Mary-Barr le Messurier of Gerrards Cross has written, directed and produced a new DVD entitled Archie and Ethel, aimed at people who look after those suffering from advanced dementia.

The DVD uses animation to convey the theory that singing can lessen depression and aggression and increase general well-being in those suffering from the illness.
Mary-Barr, who sings under the name of Molly Dee, narrates the DVD, which tells the story of Alzheimer's sufferers Archie and Ethel who face an increasing sense of loss and isolation as their dementia increases.
They begin to enjoy singing with their carers and find that it benefits them in a number of different ways.
The DVD was made following Mary-Barr being given funding for the project after being given an award by a charity.
Mary-Barr has extensive experience of working with Alzheimer's sufferers and gives performances at a number of different care homes to benefit the residents.
She said: "It is particularly interesting to see the positive effect singing has on carers as well as those with advanced dementia, because it facilitates closer engagement and better eye contact with those who are suffering from the illness.
"Overcoming the barrier of isolation which forms around those with advanced dementia is clearly extremely important, and the DVD tries to guide the carer towards a better understanding of how singing can help to do this."
