Village speeders to be targeted

Posted by Greg Burns on Nov 13, 08 10:23 AM in Gerrards Cross News

The licence plates of motorists who speed in and around Gerrards Cross are to be taken down by unpaid volunteers in an attempt to persuade them to cut their speed.
In a crack-down to take place in the weeks running up to Christmas, police PCSOs will machine-check the speed of motorists at various locations, and the number plates of those exceeding the limit will be taken down and recorded by resident volunteers.

A warning letter will be issued to the owner of the car, and although there will be no financial implications or issuing of points, it is hoped that offenders will drive more slowly next time.
The speed traps are to be set up initially along Packhorse Road and Fulmer Road.
These are being brought in at the request of Gerrards Cross Neighbourhood Action Group, which is made up of councillors, residents' representatives and police, and which also serves Fulmer and Hedgerley.
The NAG has also organised a vehicle activated sign to be installed on Packhorse Road, probably before the end of the year. This will flash up the speed limit when it is exceeded by motorists entering the village from Chalfont St Peter.
NAG member Peter Chapman said a double-pronged clampdown on speeding was more likely to succeed.
He said: "There's some evidence that motorists tend to ignore vehicle activated signs after a couple of weeks. We hope that those people who are simply not concentrating will slow down, but we think that people who are ignoring the speed limit may be more influenced by a letter. We've got to win people's hearts and minds on this and convince them that speeding is dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. The more means of persuasion we have the better."
Chief Supt Paul Tinnion, Buckinghamshire BCU Commander, said: Ò Community Speedwatch is one way to educate drivers who continue to travel above the local speed limits and explain to them the impact speeding has on the local community. By working together with the community, we can tackle the problem of speeding more effectively.Ó
The NAG is looking for volunteers to help PCSOs. Training will be given and a high visibility jacket supplied. To find out more, contact the police's Gerrards Cross and Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Team on 0845 8505505.
