Driver jailed for death of woman on A413

Aylesbury-Crown-Court.jpgA dangerous driver who caused the death of 31-year-old Samah Suliman in Gerrards Cross was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment at Aylesbury Crown Court.
David Pulsford had pleaded guilty to causing the death of Miss Suliman by dangerous driving last year.

At 11.40pm on July 25, 2007, Mr Pulsford was driving his Vauxhall Astra from Gerrards Cross to his home in north London using a satellite navigation system. He drove along a slip road that joins Woodhill Avenue to the A413 Amersham Road, which is a dual carriageway at that point.
The court heard Mr Pulsford drove past two road signs that clearly indicated he was about to join a dual carriageway and should turn left onto it, but nonetheless he turned right onto the dual carriageway and drove the wrong way down it.
Miss Suliman was travelling in convoy with her sister's BMW northbound on the A413 towards The Chalfonts. About 200 metres after the fateful turn, Mr Pulsford's Astra collided with Miss Suliman's Saab almost head on, causing massive damage to both vehicles and fatal injuries to Miss Suliman.
Her sister Sally, and other members of the family in her car, saw the collision and attempted to help, as Miss Suliman's car caught fire. They were able to get her out of the car, aided by nearby residents, but she was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Sergeant Dominic Mahon, from Thames Valley Police Roads Policing Department, said: "This is a tragic case that highlights the dangers of over-reliance on sat navs.
"As Judge Tyrer noted in his summing up, satellite navigation systems can be a useful aid to drivers but they can also be a dangerous distraction. Mr Pulsford misunderstood his sat nav's instructions and ignored the road signs that should have made him realise his error.
"If Mr Pulsford had been concentrating fully on his driving, this devastating incident could have been avoided and the Suliman family would not have lost their beloved Samah."
