And upon his appointment, announced yesterday by Downing Street, he expressed his sadness at leaving Gerrards Cross behind.
He said: "We have been so happy here as a family and have made many friends. I remain highly energised by the ministry of this church community and its further God-given potential in the next chapter of its life and mission.
"I am very thankful to God for the strong staff team and churchwardens as they lead the church into a season of change and new opportunity."
Married to Sarah, a former primary school teacher and a father of three boys aged five, eight, and nine, the family will give their final service at St James', in Oxford Road, on Sunday, February 8 2009.
He said: "I am understadably honoured to have been invited to take on this new role in the wider church."
Rt Revd John Pritchard, the Bishop of Oxford, said: "Paul has been a brilliant parish priest at Gerrards Cross and I am not at all surprised that London has snapped him up to be Bishop of Kensington.
"He has been measured and passionate, wise and imaginative, reflective and dynamic, and the parish has flourished under his leadership.
"We will miss Paul greatly but we know that God is using Paul's skills wisely in calling him to to this demanding ministry. We will be praying for him and for Sarah and the boys."
Canon Williams will be consecrated as a bishop by the Archbishop of Canterbury in St Paul's Catherdral on Wednesday, March 25.
