War hero and artist remembered
A memorial service was held on Friday, February 20 at Chalfont St Peter Parish Church for the artist Hugh Micklem of Slade Oak Lane, Gerrards Cross, who died on January 21, shortly after his 90th birthday party.
Like other men who reach this age, Hugh served in the second World War. He volunteered for the army aged 21 in 1939. The following year he was at Dunkirk and as an officer had to see the men he was responsible for safely onto the evacuating ships.
Afterwards he served on the North West Frontier in India and in Burma and, as a Staff Captain, was at Luneburg Heath, where the unconditional surrender to the Allies took place in May 1945.
Hugh was born in Elstree and came with his wife Joan, their son and daughter, to Gerrards Cross 41 years ago. Since he was a boy at Winchester College his main interest was in art. Portrait painting was his special talent and with his studio in the house he took numerous commissions and his portraits have found their way all over the world. Some of his paintings are included in the Government Art Collection. He also enjoyed painting landscapes, still life and in his later years, views from his holiday house
in Spain. He was generous in presenting pictures to raise funds for local charities and was a former member of the Bucks Art Society and, until his death, of the Misbourne Art Society.
Hugh was an intrepid skier in the 30s, the early days before ski lifts, and had a reputation as an off-piste skier in Switzerland and later in Kashmir,
He enjoyed tennis and after giving it up himself, he used to help prepare his grass court for guests well into his 80s.
He was always a courteous host to the family's many friends and has been truly described as a fine 20th century English gentleman.
He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and three grand-daughters.
