Last chance to comment on proposals to introduce speed limits on country lanes

PLANS are in hand to drastically reduce the speed limit on many roads in and around Gerrards Cross and Chalfont Saint Peter.

Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) wants to impose speed limits of 30 or 40 miles per hour on many country lanes that are currently subject only to the national speed limit of 60 miles per hour.
Also proposed are reductions to existing speed limits, including an extension to the 30 mph area on the A413 at Chalfont St Peter, where there is a speed camera. There is no proposal to reduce the speed limit on the dual carriageway section of that road, where cyclist Jim Fleming was killed in April.
The area under review includes the Chalfonts, Gerrards Cross, Seer Green and Jordans, Chesham and Amersham, with the public consultation ending on Monday (June 22).
Pat Francis, senior technician casualty reduction at BCC, said the review was originally started in response to complaints by over 100 communities across the county that national speed limit was no longer appropriate.
She said: "There are more cars, and that means more noise, more pollution, and people are much more aware of the traffic when they are walking or cycling or horse riding. We are trying to strike a balance between penalising drivers and improving quality of life for residents."
She added: "We look at the crash rate and compare it to what's expected, using national guidance. Most of the proposed changes here are not due to high crash rates,"
