Tour de France route for intrepid cyclists
A GROUP of cyclists are set to ride a section of the famous Tour de France route in memory of a friend.
Six men from Gerrards Cross set off on the Montelimar to Mont Ventoux trip on Monday, which covers 172 kilometres.
The testing ride will see them cycling up the 22km ascent of Mont Ventoux, as well as four smaller mountain climbs along the way.
They will also compete with temperatures in the high 90s as well as strong winds, making the trip an extremely tough challenge.
The group are taking on the trek in memory of their friend Daryl Hughes, a Chalfont St Giles PE teacher who died of stomach cancer in 2006 at the age of 41.
Tom Fischer, one of the six taking part in the challenge, said: "Daryl and I spent many hours together watching the 2006 Tour de France during his chemotherapy treatment.
"We agreed that once he had recovered, we would ride a stage of the Tour together, but regrettably, that day never came."
The team are aiming to raise £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, and donations can be made by visiting www.justgiving.com/tomfischer.
