Decision over incinerator to be made by BCC on Monday
A DECISION over which company is to build and run the incinerator that will burn Buckinghamshire's domestic waste is due to be made on Monday. (Sept 14th)
Scores of protesters are expected to attend the cabinet meeting which takes place at the BCC's offices in Aylesbury.
The council has said it will set up overspill rooms with a speaker system to make sure as many people as possible can hear the discussion.
The cabinet will decide which of two final bidders competing for the work will be awarded the contract - Covanta Energy whose site is near Stewartby in Bedfordshire or Waste Recycling Group whose site is at Calvert, Buckinghamshire.
Among those present at Monday's meeting will be Bucks Residents Against Incinerators, the protest group formed in 2007 to try to persuade BCC not to go down the incineration route.
Chairman Peter Brogden, a finance director from Gerrards Cross, criticised the fact that some of Monday's meeting will be held in private because BCC does not wish to divulge what it calls "commercially confidential" information.
He said: "They won't openly discuss what they are proposing, but if there's nothing to hide why not?"
BRAINS is against incineration because, it says, it is expensive, it is risky to health, and it acts as a disincentive to the council to encourage residents to reduce waste.
Mr Brogden said: "The incinerator has to run 24/7, every day of the year, and you've got to feed it. There are instances in this country where local authorities have had to actually scale back their recycling efforts in order to feed the incinerator."
They say BCC should be looking at anaerobic digestion and mechanical biological treatment, which produce more energy and less CO2 than incineration and do not have its other drawbacks.
Monday's meeting starts at 10.30am in the Mezzanine Rooms, New Council Offices, Walton Street tower block, Aylesbury.
A council spokesman said: "There is expected to be much interest in the item... Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis." There will be space for around 130 members of the public and press.
Wapseys Wood landfill site near Beaconsfield was ruled out as a site for a domestic waste incinerator by BCC last summer.

All the supermarkets in Gerrards Cross should send their daily Fruit & Veg waste to a local bioprocessor (Smelling of lavender) so that it can generate enough electricity to power street lights in Gerrards Cross as well as the supermarkets and help local schools.
