Gerrards Cross main target for BMW wheel thefts
Further details have emerged about the stealing of wheels from BMWs in Gerrards Cross, Beaconsfield, and surrounding villages.
A total of 19 cars have been targetted in that area since the star of the year, police have said.
All the thefts have happened at night, so that the shocked owner discovers what has happened only when he or she opens the front door to leave for work in the morning, finds that the car has been jacked up with bricks and that all four wheels - worth up to £450 each - are gone.
Police are warning owners to protect their vehicles by fitting wheel clamps before leaving them for the evening, or by putting them in a garage or using security lights.
BMWs have been targeted in Beaconsfield on Maxwell Road and Burkes Road (twice), in Gerrards Cross at Cheyne Close, Elmwood Park, Dukeswood Drive and Maltmans Lane, at Chalfont St Peter at Copper Ride (twice), Austinwood Close, Priory Road and Highlands Close, at Chalfont St Giles at Burtons Lane, at Iver Heath at Slough Road and Longstone Road, and at Farnham Royal at Linden Drive.
Lucy Groves, Crime Reduction Adviser for Thames Valley Police said: "The thieves use bricks from the driveways or walls, which they put under the car. They then remove all four wheels. In most cases they can do this without activating the vehicle alarm. They are extremely quick and quiet in doing this.
"There is no lighting or CCTV at the houses they are targeting and, although most BMWs have locking wheel nuts, these criminals have the specialist keys to undo them.
BMW owners shopping in Beaconsfield on Tuesday were alarmed to hear about the thefts. Sarah Morris, of Wooburn Green, said: " It is worrying, although mine is an older model so I would think it's not so attractive. It is scary though, especially as we've already had our house broken into while we were asleep and my Golf GTI was taken."
