Drink driving in county falls over Christmas
DRINK driving in Buckinghamshire over the Christmas period showed a big decrease from last year according to new figures.
Statistics released this week by Thames Valley Police show that there were 22 per cent less people found to be driving when over the alcohol limit than there were over the festive period in 2008.
The figures show the results of the police's annual Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving, and demonstrate that out of 857 people stopped by police, just 40 were found to be over the limit.
Sgt Chris Appleby, of Thames Valley Police's roads policing department, said: "The results of this campaign have been very encouraging.
"We have carried out a great many more tests on drivers across the force area than in previous years and seen the number of positive tests fall considerably.
"There do however remain a minority who fail to get the message that it is totally unacceptable to drink and drive.
"Roadside breath tests are carried out throughout the year and not just at Christmas. If anyone is thinking of driving under the influence of alcohol they should think twice.
"If you know of anyone who drinks or takes drugs and drives, call the police or the anonymous Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111."
All drivers who provided positive breath tests, or refused or failed to provide one, face losing their licence for at least 12 months.
They could also go to prison for six months or pay a fine of up to £5,000.
